After seeing how much you all loved my Chili Lime Chicken (One Pan), I knew I had to share this stir fry recipe, too. The chicken is so moist and tender and that sticky sauce has the perfect sweet and spicy flavor that's mind-blowing!
Table of contents
Key ingredients
- Oil- Used for sauteing and adds flavor.
- Chicken- I like to use chicken breasts for this recipe.
- Salt and pepper- Adjust according to personal preference.
- Garlic powder- Adds a touch more garlic taste to the dish.
- Garlic- Fresh is best and finely minced.
- Honey- Adds that unique sweetness.
- Chicken broth- Use low sodium or you can even use water.
- Vinegar- Give it a kick and compliments the honey.
- Soy sauce- Be sure it is low sodium as well.
- Red chili flakes- Optional but adds a nice little kick.
Variations
- Add vegetables- Like some frozen Asian vegetables. Do this in the last 5-6 minutes and also add 1 teaspoon sesame oil during cooking. Then garnish with sesame seeds just prior to serving.
- Crispy version- Stir fry the chicken breasts, coated in some flour or cornstarch, until golden brown and crispy. Remove chicken from the pan and keep aside. In the same pan, make the sauce by mixing together remaining ingredients until thick. Add crispy chicken back into the pan and coat it fully with the sauce. Serve immediately.
- Use chicken thighs- First, stir fry the chicken until browned. Then add the rest of the ingredients. Cover and cook a few minutes, then uncover and cook until the liquid is reduced and thickened. Garnish and enjoy!
- Chicken wings or legs- This makes a great wing sauce and you simply follow the directions below.
- Slow cooker/Crockpot version- Add all the ingredients in a slow cooker and cook on high heat for 3-4 hours or until chicken is fully cooked.

What to serve with honey garlic chicken?
This can be served with the following sides: bread, rolls, breadsticks, boiled rice, white rice noodles, fried rice, quinoa, salad, Creamy Mashed Potatoes (One Pot), Oven Roasted Broccoli (One Pan), or Oven Roasted Asparagus (One Pan).
Tips and techniques
- Red chili flakes are optional- But they do a subtle spicy kick that I love.
- Use any honey you like- Different honeys from different parts of the world give this recipe a distinct flavor.
- Use both garlic powder and fresh garlic- For the maximum garlic flavor.
- The amount of garlic can be adjusted- Based on your preference, but the quantities I have included below give the best results.
- Don't replace honey with corn syrup, sugar or molasses- Because the flavor changes dramatically.
- Either broth or water can be used- But if you are using broth, make sure it's low sodium so as to prevent the meal from becoming too salty.
Recipe FAQs
Combine together in a nonstick saucepan- In a non-stick pan, combine chicken broth or water, salt, pepper, garlic, red chili flakes, honey, vinegar, and soy sauce. Then cover overmedium high heat until liquid is reduced and sauce thickens. Brush over cooked/baked/grilled/fried chicken.
In a large bowl, mix together chicken breasts, chicken broth or water, salt, pepper, garlic, red chili flakes, honey, vinegar, and soy sauce. Cover and chill for at least 1 hour or overnight. Then bake, grill or cook on the stovetop. Serve and enjoy!
This can be done by letting the sauce simmer in the pan, uncovered for at least 5 minutes or until it reaches the desired consistency.
