Next time you need a quick dinner, make this pasta that everyone is going to love. It comes together in one pot and the penne pasta is immersed in a delicious sausage pasta sauce, loaded with tomatoes, cheese, and Italian seasoning. Table of contents
Key ingredients
- Oil- Used for sauteing vegetables and brings out flavor.
- Italian sausage- Be sure they are cut into half inch slices.
- Onion- Finely chopped is best for texture and appeal.
- Garlic- Fresh is best and yields greater taste.
- Diced tomatoes- I just used canned, but you can use fresh.
- Pasta sauce- Your favorite marinara will do nicely.
- Green peppers- Slice them into thin slices as opposed to dicing into chunks.
- Italian seasoning- This is key to the overall flavor profile.
- Salt and pepper- Adjust according to your personal preference.
- Water- Allows the pasta to cook and brings together all the flavors.
- Penne pasta- You can use any type, but this is my favorite for this dish.
- Mozzarella cheese- Use a cup of shredded for ooey gooey deliciousness.
Variations
- Use an instant pot- Check out the recipe I already have on the blog right here.
- Add more peppers- Add 2 cups of your favorite peppers (green, red, yellow e.t.c).
- Use Cajun shrimp- Alongside the sausage by adding 1 cup shrimp.
- Creamy version- Add 1 cup cream cheese.
- Smoked option- Simply use smoked sausages for that unique flavor.
- Spice it up- Use spicy sausage and add 1 teaspoon red chili flakes.
- Add spinach- Add 1 cup chopped spinach (fresh or frozen).
- Use broccoli- Add 1 cup small broccoli florets (fresh or frozen).
- Cajun version- Use cajun sausage instead of Italian sausage. Replace Italian seasoning with Cajun seasoning.
- Try bow tie pasta- Instead of using penne in sausage penne pasta, you can use bow tie pasta.
How to make Italian pork sausage pasta?
- Cook sausage- In a non-stick pan with oil.
- Add in- Garlic and onion, then saute until golden brown.
- Mix in- Diced tomatoes, pasta sauce, green peppers Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, water, and penne pasta.
- Cover and cook- For about 20 minutes or until pasta is fully cooked.
- Add cheese- Then mix altogether and enjoy.
What goes well with Italian pasta skillet?
- Breads- Such as garlic bread, breadsticks, or dinner rolls.
- Salad- Like this Easy Green Salad (One Bowl) or Apple Salad (One Pot)
- Coleslaw- Along with salads, something like this Oil and Vinegar Coleslaw (One Bowl) will add healthy greens and help fill empty bellies.
Tips and techniques
- If pasta looks too dry- Add more water. If it's too wet, let it cook uncovered until liquid is reduced.
- Adjust the amount of Italian seasoning- Based on your preference.
- Use any cheese you like- Instead of mozzarella cheese.
- Don't drain the liquid from diced tomatoes- Because it's required in this recipe.
- Use a nonstick pot- To prevent sticking and burning and be sure to stir occasionally while pasta is cooking.
Recipe FAQs
Yes. First, mix together boiled pasta, cooked sausages, and a jar of pasta sauce in a casserole dish.
Then, top it off with lots of shredded cheese. Bake until cheese is fully melted and bubbly. Serve and enjoy.
Sometimes this can happen if there isn't enough water. Simply add in more to fix it.
If your pasta comes out looking too soupy, simply let it cook uncovered until the liquid is reduced.
Storage
- Make ahead- This recipe can be made 1 day in before needed and stored in the fridge. When you are ready to serve, heat in the microwave, instant pot or stovetop.
- Refrigerate- Leftovers can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Freeze- This is not recommended because pasta does not thaw well.
- Reheat- Use the microwave to reheat the meal or heat over the stovetop.
